Cosan Regatta 2023

On Thursday 7th September 2023, we held the 5th Cosan Charity Regatta in Lymington, Hampshire. This year, we had a fleet of 11 yachts and over 100 crew competing for the coveted trophy and the winners Charity donation.

Conditions were warm and sunny as yachts headed to the start line for the first race of the day. A light easterly breeze making for some tricky manoeuvres to keep in clean air and make a break for the windward mark.

A fabulous start by Cosan 1 onboard Sydney II meant they rounded the top mark ahead of the fleet and although the final downwind leg was a tense affair, they eventually took line honours, with Capita (Slow Gin) in 2nd and Equiniti (Athena) in 3rd.

Race 2 was an exciting start line with the fleet split equally on port and starboard tacks, those yachts at the pin end of the line gaining most advantage. The windward mark took the fleet across the Solent towards the Isle of Wight, where the tide really started to kick in making the cross tide rounding quite tricky. The Trafalgar House yacht (Seasaw) made up big ground over the final leg by taking an inshore line to the finish thereby securing line honours. The crew from Balance FS (Miss Reality) took 2nd spot with Equiniti (Athena) again taking 3rd.

After a splendid lunch ashore at Royal Solent Yacht Club in Yarmouth, the crews headed back out to the start line for the final race of the day from Hurst Point back to Lymington. As forecasted however, the wind dropped off and with the tide now flooding, the decision was taken to abandon the race.

An unfortunate end to the days fun but at least crews had two races to count. On handicap, it was clear that the conditions had benefitted the smaller, lighter boats. Congratulations to the Vidett crew onboard Songbird for taking the overall trophy with Balance FS (Miss Reality) runners up and Trafalgar House (Seasaw) rounding out the podium.

The prize giving party took place at The Angel and Blue Pig in Lymington long into the evening, where Vidett collected their trophy and nominated Plantlife International as their charity for this year.  We will shortly be sending them the winners donation of £1500 to support them in continuing with their great work.
